This sign says it all:
For a kid, going to Grandma’s house is like going to Vegas.
When kids are with Grandma and Grandpop, special things happen.
Often, those special things turn into a big mess,
but Grandma and Grandpop don’t mind.
At Grandma and Grandpop’s house, kids can eat ten cookies for dessert if they want.
Heck, cookies can be eaten ANY time.
When the kids are with Grandma, there is always something fun to do that they don’t normally do at home. Just recently, for instance, my kids went to Grandma’s house and dyed Easter Eggs. It didn’t occur to me to try that at home, but Grandma knew that my kids would love it.
Remember the vinegary smell of the dye? The delight when you scoop the egg out of the cup to see its new color? The challenge of balancing an egg on a spoon and sitting it carefully to dry?
The next time my kids see an egg, they will think of the rainy afternoon they spent in Grandma’s kitchen, breathing in the perfume of warm cookies and soaking up the undivided attention of a grownup who loves them.
We parents should probably act more like a grandparents every once in a while.
Let’s bake cookies together, and not worry about the mess.

Brings back precious memories of my Mom. For once she outdid grandma. Thanks
I moved to England in 2008 and by Easter 2009 I was missing the states like a little kids. My mom mailed me a couple of egg dying kits and I introduced the tradition to my fiance and his family. They loved it! There were no actual kids….except us.
I remember doing this with my sweet, longsuffering mother when I was little. Great memories!

I have great memories of my grandparents and times spent with them. I hope my son develops those memories with his Poppa as well. We dyed eggs yesterday afternoon ourselves.

What a great idea, for parents to act like grandparents once in awhile. I think they should set a day each month to impersonate being a grandparent for their kids and just try to have an all-fun day. I love that idea!
We liked coloring Easter eggs at home growing up. I remember especially liking the purple ones and using some wax to write our names on them first before dying them. It was a fun indoor activity! Eating them I wasn’t so big on–I’d rather have the chocolate marshmallow eggs!

Sounds like your kids have some fantastic grandparents! I agree that we should worry more about enjoying ourselves than the mess we may create sometimes! Those are some nice looking eggs

The Vegas theory is a classic! So Funny!!! And, So True!!! I hope that my grandkids,
(someday in the far, far future, she says prayerfully) will feel like that about my house.
Have a great day,
Joyce

Oh, I miss my Grannie Annie! This post brought back memories for me, except my Grannie couldn’t cook so the cookies in the jar were always Arch Brothers Molasses.

Excellent advice. Also, I’m a bad Mommy and forgot to get anything to decorate eggs this year. Bad Mommy!

Your kids are lucky to have grandparents like these. For some reason (and really, my kids came out great!) my mom always felt like she had to teach discipline which equals little fun!
Lovely pictures and thought. I remember my grandma playing tea party with me. I just loved that.

Grandmas and grandpas are real special people:)) Have a Happy Easter!
How cute:) My grandma always used to have ice cream and cookies waiting for me! It must be so fun to be a grandparent and have your house be the special place that kids adore coming to!

I mostly missed out on the grandparent experience. I only had a grandma in CT who came out every summer, and a grandpa in MN who came out every winter.

I just showed this to my 15 year old and told her this is how it’s gonna be when she has kids. I want that sign!

I become a grandma 2 years ago! And I’m a young grandma at 46 years old (in my eyes, anyway). It’s been great……once you get used to the title of “grandma” (I don’t look at my mom anymore when someone calls out grandma)! LOL!
