Don’t panic, but summer is coming.
At first, it will be really fun.
Then it will be boring.
Have no fear! I discovered a good way to conquer boredom.
Here it is…
Write down suggestions and stick ‘em in the jar.
When your kid gets bored, let her pick 3 suggestions.
She can use one suggestion and put the other 2 back in the jar.
Here are a few of the outdoor activities that I put in our boredom jar:
1) Pick dandelions and give the bouquet to someone you like.
2) Run through the sprinkler, or water the flowers (and yourself) with the hose.
3) Collect bugs in a jar and watch them for a little while. Release them back into the wild
4) Get a bucket of soapy water and wash your bike or skateboard. While you’re at it, ask if you can wash your parent’s car.
5) Set up a target on the ground. Try to throw a ball so it lands close to the target. See how far away you can stand and still throw the ball close to the target. Try throwing paper plates, frisbees, and paper airplanes at the target.
6) Get a cup of water and a paintbrush. Go outside and paint rocks with the water to see how they change color. Paint water on the sidewalk, the driveway, leaves and trees.
7) Find a shady place under a bush or tree and build a little house out of twigs, rocks, and leaves. Bring some toys outside so they can play inside your twig house.
Do you have chalk? Draw a path on your driveway and then ride your bike along the path. Or, draw a chalk picture on the driveway and paint water on top of it to see how the colors change.
9) Can you find a white pebble? A gray rock? A black rock? Are there any red or blue colored rocks near your house? How many hues can you find?
10) Ask for an old sheet or blanket and drape it over the swing set to make a tent. You can also drape it over a low tree branch if you don’t have a swing set. Voila! You’ve got your very own tent!
Stay tuned for more Boredom Busters in a few weeks…

I love this idea! I bet the kids could come up with great ideas to add to the jar.
Great idea! We actually did something similar when I was a kid. It was my idea though. We put the names of all our games in a box, when we were bored, we picked a game from the box and played it.

My mom’s idea of boredom busters involved things like polishing silver, cleaning out the garage/attic, pulling weeds, shelling pecans, cleaning out our closet, ironing, etc. Things that were outside our regular chores but needed to be done at some point.

Here’s a link to a post I did last summer with some other fun ideas to keep kids entertained over the summer. Thanks for the fresh ideas. I need to update my “Boredom Busters.”

I am printing those out even as I type! My kids had yesterday off – one day – and were bored because I banned video games.

Great ideas! I am a nanny for the summer, and will definitely be using some of your ideas! They are a little young for some of these, but I can simplify them to make them fit!
Super ideas! I am going to put together a boredom-buster list too! Thank you!

Great Ideas! I will for sure use these, We just cancelled our cable for the summer, so I really need more ideas for entertaining the kids! It’s nice to switch it up, I think I’m going to make a jar as well, and let them each take turns picking out something we can all do together for the day!
Thanks so much
