My dog is terrified of “beeps”

by Lynn on January 16, 2012

A few weeks ago, we acquired a number of new things that go “beep.”
Most of us were happy about the development.
One of us wasn’t.

The new heart-rate monitor watch beeps.
And now we have TWO cell phones that beep.
My dog is not happy about the new additions to the family.

At first, she tried to be brave.
She tried to make friends with the beeps.

See, Mommy? I'm perfectly calm.

Her valiant efforts were for naught.
It’s obvious that she’s consumed with worry.

Was that a beep?

 I try to distract her.
Especially if I’m expecting a text message…

It works for a little while.
Until she hears a “beep.”

Then I lose her.
Everything around here beeps.
The timer. The cell phones. The watch.
My dog has gotten neurotic about the sound.
Whenever she hears it, she runs and hides upstairs.

.

What should I do?

I think you should play elevator music all day to drown out the beeps. Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure that will solve everything. I’m sure you can find something on Pandora. OR how about this. Pull up Pandora on your phone (if you can, I can’t cause mine doesn’t do that but I’m not bitter in any way or anything) play the 12 Dogs of Christmas (you know when the dogs do the “singing”) and she’ll fall in love with the phone. The only draw back is you might have to share it with her after that.
Earplugs?
Hey, YOU asked.

Our dog is okay with beeps. It’s the remote control car that Charlie keeps chasing her with that scares the daylights out of her! Not that I blame the poor dog. She was so excited when the boy went back to school.

Surely desensitization (and I can’t tell you how tickled I am that I spelled that right the first try) would work here. If you can get something with a beep that doesn’t freak out your dog give her a treat every time it beeps. Slowly introduce her to the other beeping things and do the same thing.
I admit that I’m not the dog trainer in the family but I think that’ll work, or at least help. She shouldn’t go through life being terrified of beeps. Hey, she’s a Sheltie. She should be delighted by anything that squeaks or beeps or crows like a rooster.

I really can’t get over how beautiful your dog is. Her eyes and nose are luminous pools in those pictures.

I feel badly for her, especially knowing how sensitive doggy hearing is to begin with! (And, perhaps, because I am very jumpy too. Maybe.)

That’s so funny! Well, I guess not for the dog though. One of my dogs cries whenever the answering machine picks up and she hears someone talking on the other end. It starts as a cry and then turns into sort of a dog talk, howling thing. We just laugh at him, and how rude is that? It probably hurts his ears and he’s very sensitive. Yikes. (It’s still funny though.)

Well can you blame her?! Beeps can be very scary.

well if you really loved her, you would get rid of all said devices and move to the big wood and live like laura ingalls wilder!

Your dog is so cute! Maybe try relating the beeps to something positive – treats, pets, etc everytime she hears a beep. So she may come to look forward to the noise instead of fearing it.

Thanks for stopping by Two Washingtons.
